South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley has issued a release following up on the Department of Revenue’s release regarding the cyber attack in which approximately 3.6 million Social Security numbers and 387,000 credit and debit card numbers were exposed to hackers.
Gov. Haley, along with South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) Chief Mark Keel and South Carolina Department of Revenue (DOR) Director Jim Etter, has outlined additional consumer safety solutions, including extended fraud resolution and coverage for dependents who are minors, available to South Carolina taxpayers.
As of Tuesday morning, the call center set up to assist South Carolina taxpayers had received approximately 533,000 calls and approximately 287,000 signups for the one year of credit monitoring and identity theft protection being offered to affected taxpayers.
Gov. Haley and Chief Keel reiterated that anyone who has filed a South Carolina tax return since 1998 should call 1-866-578-5422 to enroll in a consumer protection service. (The call center is open 9:00 AM – 9:00 PM EST on Monday through Friday and 11:00 AM – 8:00 PM EST on Saturday and Sunday.)
Any South Carolina taxpayer who wishes to bypass the telephone option may access the program online athttp://www.protectmyid.com/scdor. Taxpayers should enter the code SCDOR123 when prompted. Taxpayers have until the end of January 2013 to sign up for this program.
